Flagyl/Metronidazole
What is it?
Metronidazole is an antibiotic used to treat bacterial and protozoal infections, including BV and trichomoniasis. It can be used to treat other infections as your healthcare provider determines.
Inform your provider if:
* You are pregnant, trying to get pregnant, or breastfeeding.
* You have had an allergic reaction to this medication in the past.
* You are taking anticoagulants (blood thinners) or antabuse for alcoholism.
Use:
* Continue to take this medication as prescribed, even if you start to feel better. Do not miss any doses of this medication. If you do miss a dose, take the dose as soon as possible. Do not double dose.
* Take this medication with food or milk to reduce the possibility of upset stomach.
* DO NOT DRINK ALCOHOL WHILE ON THIS MEDICATION and for 72 hours after your last dose of the medication.
* If using the vaginal gel
o The gel may leak out of your vagina; wear a mini-pad to protect your clothing
o Do not have intercourse while using the gel, as this will decrease the effectiveness of the gel
Side Effects:
Common side effects of this medication include:
* Diarrhea
* Dizziness
* Stomach pains
* Headache
* Nausea
* Constipation
* Metallic taste in the mouth
* Loss of appetite
* Weakness/lethargy
Call the office if you have:
* a sore mouth or tongue
* feeling clumsy or unsteady
* a white, furry growth on your tongue (thrush)
* a skin rash, hives, or itching
* mood or mental changes
* any new dryness, irritation, or discharge from the vagina
Things to remember with any medication:
* Keep medications away from children
* Store the medication in a cool, dark, dry environment
* Throw away medicine that is outdated
* Take medicine as prescribed
